Result: 6-3
I try out the UR artifact deck and find a lot of success, though don't quite have the mana and power to snag the trophy.
Draft
I first picked Pinnacle Emissary over Watery Grave, Mouth of the Storm, a couple okay removal spells, and Nebula Dragon. The card seemed sweet when my opponents played it against me and I wanted to try it out. Naturally, I take Cryogen Relic out of pack two. Off to a good start! There's nothing I really want in pack 3 so I take Tragic Trajectory over Starbreach Whale and not much else. Pick 4, Survey Mechan over Nutrient Block, Stomping Ground, Illvoi Operative. Mechan is an artifact with a powerful late-game effect though maybe Nutrient Block is better here. Pick 5, Command Bridge, which might have been a mistake. Mechan Navigator would have been better as a two-mana artifact. I'm not sure why I pick Germinating Wurm over Kav Landseeker. Maybe I misread the Landseeker? I finish the pack with two Nebula Dragons, which is nice.
In pack two, I first pick Terrapact Intimidator over Anticausal Vestige. I think the Vestige is probably more powerful, but I already have two Nebula Dragons and an aggressive two-drop looks awesome here. There's a selection of removal in pack 2 and I take Cryoshatter because it deals with nearly anything. In pack 8, I take Plasma Bolt over Mm'menon, Uthros Exile. Not sure about it since my artifact count is 7, which isn't bad for halfway through, if I want to prioritize artifacts, but at this point I think I prioritize the cheap interaction.
Pack three, I pick Mechan Assembler over Mechanozoa. I've been impressed with the 'zoa but Assembler is an uncommon that might work out in my deck, and blue seemed open in pack one so maybe I'll get it back. (I do not.) The pack ends up being somewhat disappointing to me; red appears to be flowing but I'm not getting anything too great, though Zookeeper Mechan is a nice pickup.
Deckbuilding
Straightforward build. I play all the red and blue cards and all the artifacts. I run a couple Chrome Companions which doesn't make me super happy but they are artifacts and my most powerful cards care about artifacts being cast or entering play. I feel pretty good about the deck. 14 artifacts plus 3 more that could put an artifact into play. Good creatures, good removal.
Gameplay
Game 1 is pretty funny. They counter my turn two Chrome Companion (rude but okay) and then Banishing Light my turn three Chrome Companion. We spend several turns playing lands and passing. I'm wary of Beyond the Quiet but my hand is all removal spells so I don't have anything else to do but play lands, myself. My turn one Slagdrill Scrapper does seven points of damage to them before they use Banishing Light on that, too. By the time we both start playing creatures, I deploy all the removal in my hand and easily beat down to victory.
I have mana problems throughout the event. I miss a land on turn three in game 2, though Terrapact Intimidator's Lander tokens are able to bootstrap my mana production. This opponent does have Beyond the Quiet and I'm not totally sure it's good for them to play -- I have more creatures on board but no great attacks. At the end of the game, they play Devastating Onslaught for 3 (!!) targeting their Auxiliary Boosters, which initially scares me, but... the equipment has haste, not the tokens, so the turn ends with them having added three 2/2s to the board. I guess that's pretty cool, but it's not enough. Plasma Bolt finishes the job.
I miss lethal in game 3 by not activating Zookeeper Mechan but it doesn't end up mattering.
One of my losses is to a pretty good UW aggressive deck where I'm stuck on five lands in play and two Nebula Dragons in hand. My second loss, I'm stuck on three lands for two turns and get hit with two Virus Beetles to which I discard a couple of my more expensive cards. They aggressively burn through their creatures and lands to draw cards with Slagdrill Scrapper, which I'm perplexed by, but I guess it works out for them. I worry that they're digging for something like Mutinous Massacre, but I never see it. I almost stabilize but Weftstalker Ardent and Dubious Delicacy seal my fate. In my third loss, I'm stuck on four lands for two turns with, again, two Nebula Dragon in my hand and three cards that cost 4 or more. Maybe there's too much top-end in the deck, or not enough card draw? I get run over by a UG deck with Uthros Psionicist in play for too many turns.
I thought this deck could go the distance but I fall a little short. My play is far from ideal but I feel like I got a little unlucky with my draws. Huge thanks to all the opponents that gave me Landers with Terrapact Intimidator. Mechan Assembler ended up being okay in a couple games. Pinnacle Emissary was always good. The game where I had Mechan Assembler out, warped in Pinnacle Emissary, make a 2/2, played Specimen Freighter, make a 1/1, bounce two of my opponent's creatures, attack for 7, station the Freighter for 6? Amazing. That's what I was hoping for, I just wish I got to do it in more games.
