Storm the Small Saga

A party of small rodents charge into a line of Thimble Guards -- mice with thimble helmets. One mouse wears a cape and stabs forward with a green pocketknife. A white rat with a blue mohawk wields a craft knife. A mole wearing glasses and a purple wizard outfit carries a teal lighter. A squirrel in a kilt brings up the rear. They form a wedge driving into a wall of guards who are scattered by their charge.

Not Volca art, obviously, but it was too cool to not share. It started as a joke but I commissioned an ambitious piece as a challenge for Holt5: Jason Rainville's masterpiece 'Storm the Seedcore', art for a Magic: the Gathering card, with the characters from indie adventure game Small Saga, as a sort of collision of our interests in winter 2023. He started working on it but burned out on it after a few months. He surprised me in summer 2025 with this completed work.

It's an incredible piece. The painterly style is beautiful, the colors vibrant, the characters alive and in motion. He retains the energy and the visual design of 'Storm the Seedcore' and transforms it into something new. Siobhan carrying the lighter-as-Wrenn cracks me up. Super cool, and I'm so proud of Holt5 for pushing himself to create this. As Jason writes in his blog post about the original, "If you like this piece, if it moved you, please remember a person created it."
